Factions
In Black Horizon, factions are the groups, organizations, alliances, civilizations and worlds, who can be identified as having a unified larger goal. This could be a small raiding groups of 3 pirates all the way up to a galaxy spanning empire.
Factions are merely the term used to get an overview of the groups of people at odds with eachother in the galaxy.

An interstellar factions is a faction which has an influence and reach so far that their actions can be felt throughout the galaxy,
independent systems
An independent system, is a faction primarily operating from one star system or a single planet.

Other factions include historical factions and other organizations of note.
